The Basics of Climate Change and Environment Workshop

On 19/06/2024, Tigaad Environmental Action conducted a workshop titled “The Basics of Climate Change and Environment” at Somali National University, specifically targeting students in the Environmental Science program. This workshop aimed to provide students with a foundational understanding of climate change, its impacts, and the importance of environmental stewardship.

The primary goals of the workshop were to:

  1. Introduce students to the fundamental concepts of climate change.
  2. Highlight the global and local impacts of climate change.
  3. Discuss mitigation and adaptation strategies.
  4. Encourage students to engage in proactive environmental actions.

Mr. Osman Jama, founder of Tigaad Environmental Action, delivered the keynote address. He shared insights on the mission of Tigaad Environmental Action and the urgency of addressing climate change. His speech set the tone for the workshop, inspiring students to become environmental advocates.

The core of the workshop was a detailed presentation by Mr. Guled Rage. His presentation covered essential topics such as:

  • The science behind climate change, including the greenhouse effect and global warming.
  • The anthropogenic factors contributing to climate change.
  • The far-reaching impacts of climate change on ecosystems, weather patterns, and human societies.
  • Strategies for mitigating climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
  • Adaptation measures that communities can adopt to cope with the effects of climate change.

The workshop included real-world case studies to demonstrate practical applications of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. These case studies showcased successful environmental initiatives, such as community-based conservation projects, sustainable agricultural practices, and renewable energy solutions in Somalia and other regions.

Mr. Jama, also a lecturer at Somali National University, concluded the workshop with remarks encouraging students to apply the knowledge gained to their studies and future careers. He emphasized the importance of taking individual and collective action to protect the environment.
